MSU class of 2017 RHP signee Zane Stephens update

An analysis of Mississippi State class of 2017 signee Zane Stephens, a right-hand pitcher from Suwannee High School in Live Oak, Florida.

  • Name: Zane Stephens
  • Classification: 2017
  • Position: RHP
  • Ht: Wt: 6-1, 165
  • Bats-Throws: R-R
  • High School: Suwannee High School in Live Oak, Florida

High School - Perfect Game has him ranked among the top 500 players in the class of 2017. He was selected to the 2017 Rawlings-Perfect Game Preseason All-American Team as an Honorable Mention selection. He was also a 2016 Underclass All Americans High Honorable Mention selection.

2017 Season - This past season, Stephens appeared in 9 game. He had a 6-2 won-lost record and a 1.24 ERA. He threw 2 no-hitters. In 45 innings, he allowed 23 hits, walked 15 while striking out 77. Teams hit .139 against him.

Recruiting - He chose Mississippi State over Troy, Florida Atlantic, Florida State, Clemson, South Florida and Central Florida.

2017 MLB Draft - Stephens, who throws his fastball in the 88-90 miles per hour range, could get drafted late in the draft but I expect teams will want to see how the 6-foot-1, 165-pounder develops while playing baseball for Mississippi State during the next three seasons.

MSU 2018 Season - I can see Stephens coming in and competing for a middle of the week relief role next season. It's also possible he could redshirt his true freshman season and continue to add weight and strength, which will likely add velocity to his pitches.
