High School - He went to West Aurora (IL) High School. In high school he threw his fastball 84-88 miles per hour consistently, while topping out at 88. He signed with Villanova but transferred to Waubonsee (IL) Community College mid-year of his freshman season.
2016 Season - He had a 9-4 record with a 2.11 ERA in 13 games, all as a starter. He struck out 100 batters in 81.0 innings, while allowing 56 hits and 24 walks.
2017 Season - This season he was 6-2 with a 3.20 ERA in 9 games. In 56.1 innings he allowed 41 hits while walking 17 and striking out 89. He pitched his best ball in his last two outings of the season, allowing 0 runs in 14 innings, while giving up just 6 hits and walking 3 in addition to striking out 18.
Recruiting - He chose Mississippi State over his other two finalists, Arizona and Kentucky.
2017 MLB Draft - Although he can throw in the low 90s (92-94 consistently) with good movement on his fastball, his current size will likely limit him going really high in the draft this year. As he continues to add size and strength (and likely additional velo), I see his draft status rising. I expect pro teams would like to see him attend MSU for a season and see how he develops. If he does develop, then he could move himself into the top 5-10 rounds of next year's draft.
MSU 2018 Season - I expect to see Liebelt at MSU this coming season even if he winds up being drafted in the 2017 MLB draft. He has been a starter both years at Waubonsee Community College, while being a reliever during summer ball. He could wind up doing either role for Mississippi State.
