Tyreque Reed (Lee Adams, ICC)

Class of 2017 MSU baseball signee Tyreque Reed update

An analysis of Mississippi State class of 2017 signee Tyreque Reed, a first baseman/right fielder from Itawamba (MS) Community College.

  • Name: Tyreque Reed
  • Classification: Sophomore
  • Position: 1B/RF
  • Ht: Wt: 6-1, 260
  • Bats-Throws: R-R
  • Junior College: Itawamba (MS) Community College
  • High School: Houlka (MS) High School

High School - Reed played three sports in high school, baseball, basketball and football. After hitting over .600 for 1A Houlka (MS) HIgh School his senior season of prep ball, Reed signed with ICC to play baseball.

2016 Season - Reed hit .316 with 10 home runs and 43 RBIs his freshman season at ICC. He walked 17 times while striking out 30 in 153 total at bats.

2017 Season - During his sophomore season, he improved in every category, hitting .504 with 15 home runs and 57 RBIs while walking 46 times and striking out 11 in 196 total plate appearances.

Recruiting - He chose Mississippi State over recruiting interest from LSU, Kentucky, Auburn, Alabama, Samford, Tennessee Tech, Arkansas State and numerous other schools.

2017 MLB Draft - Reed has raw plus power, mostly from the pull side of the plate. He is athletic for a man his size. He made huge strides hitting-wise between his freshman and sophomore seasons at ICC. As of now, he is likely just outside of the 10th round in the Major League Baseball draft. I suspect pro scouts would like to see him go to MSU for a year so he can continue to develop all of his tools and they can see him hit against more advanced pitchers.

MSU 2018 Season - Reed will compete for immediate playing time at first base, right field or DH once he sets foot on the MSU campus. And I expect him to turn down the pros this summer so he will have the chance to spend a year at MSU with the hope of moving himself into the top 5 rounds of next year's draft. He projects as a middle of the order hitter with tremendous power potential.
