[Premium site article] Find out who is looking at whom in the Mississippi high school baseball recruiting circles. Find out the latest on seniors Corey Carter, Clay Dirks, Brae Wright, Van Pope, Brian Pettway, Christopher Rayborn, and Stephen Head.

Below is the latest on the recruitment of several of the top senior baseball players in the state of Mississippi.

West Point High School outfielder COREY CARTER, one of the top 100 players in the nation (91st) and the top player in Mississippi, according to Prospects Plus, has received calls from, "Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Birmingham Southern and New Orleans. All of the schools have asked me to visit."

When I asked Corey which school he would eventually sign with, he said, "more than likely it will be (Mississippi) State," although he said he would probably visit several schools.

One pro scout has told Corey he might be drafted in the first or second round of next June's Major League Baseball Draft.

Terry High School shortstop VAN POPE, according to his dad Peter Pope, is receiving interest from, "Ole Miss, LSU, Arkansas, Alabama and South Carolina. The Air Force Academy is chasing him pretty hard. Southern Miss has shown a little interest in him. Another school that is showing interest in him is Jacksonville State in Florida. I would like for him to stay in Mississippi if he gets a chance."

His dad also said that, "he went to Ole Miss' camp this summer because, of all the schools, they are showing the most interest in him. Their coaches have told me that they are looking to him as their shortstop of the future. They are talking like he will come in and start as a freshman if he chooses Ole Miss. They are hard and heavy on him so, basically, he doesn't have to visit them."

As far as the Major League Baseball Draft is concerned, "he could go high in the draft next year but I'm pushing him to college especially if he gets a chance with an SEC school," said his dad. "I still think he needs two to three years of college."

Prospects Plus lists Van as the 12th best player in Mississippi.

CHRISTOPHER RAYBORN, a pitcher for Adams County Christian School, has Southern Miss and Ole Miss continuing to show interest in him. Prospects Plus lists Christopher as the 6th best player in Mississippi.

Other players that I have either talked to or received reliable information about:

  • Hernando High School's LHP CLAY DIRKS. Clay has LSU as the leader with Mississippi State his second choice. He will visit MSU later this month, according to his mother. Clay is listed as the 232nd best player in the nation, according to Prospects Plus.
  • Hillcrest Christian's 1B STEPHEN HEAD is an Ole Miss commitment, according to a source of mine. Stephen is not listed in Prospects Plus.
  • Warren Central High School's OF/RHP BRIAN PETTWAY is an Ole Miss commitment. (Info came from a reliable source.) Brian is listed as Prospects Plus' 11th best player in Mississippi.
  • Southaven High School's LHP BRAE WRIGHT is an Ole Miss commitment, according to his dad and also Brae. Prospects Plus lists Brae as the 264th best player in the nation.

** The Prospects Plus rankings are from their August/September issue. Prospects Plus is a high school and college scouting publication put out by Baseball America and Perfect Game USA.
