Lady Bulldogs Hosts MSU Classic

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State women's basketball will hosts its annual MSU Classic this Thursday, Dec. 18 through Saturday, Dec. 20 at Humphrey Coliseum. There will be one game each night with the Lady Bulldogs facing Southern University Dec. 18 at 7 p.m., then the Jaguars will face McNeese State on Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. and State will take on the McNeese State on Dec. 20 at 7 p.m. This marks the 15th year of the MSU Classic with the Lady Bulldogs going 25-3 in Classic competition.

State is coming off of its first win in three games, 94-61, against Tennessee-Martin at the BancorpSouth Center in Tupelo, Miss. on Tuesday. Junior guards Tiania Burns and Tan White posted double-doubles on the night, while senior guard Jessica Carter was on fire from three-point land going 5-for-6 for 15 season-high points. For the season, Burns is averaging 15.4 ppg and White is putting up 14.3 ppg on the board.

Southern (1-4) is off to a slow start this season, earning its only win of the season at home vs. Tougaloo College, 90-60. The Jaguars most recently fell to 12th-ranked Louisiana Tech, 78-29, in their last game a week ago. The Jaguars boast four players in double digits - Ashley Blake is averaging a double-double with 11.3 ppg and 12.3 rpg. Rolanda Monroe is putting up 16.4 ppg, Shere' Cunningham has 15.0 ppg and Sade' Rhodes has 12.0 ppg. Southern returns two letterwinners, including starter Rolanda Monroe, for a team that went 17-8 last season and finished fourth in the Southwestern Athletic Conference going 13-5.

McNeese State (2-5) most recently fell to Texas A&M, 74-48. The Cowgirls have faced three MSU opponents already this season, falling to New Orleans, 79-53, Mississippi, 85-72, and South Alabama, 54-51. Sophomore forward Regina Spivey is leading the Cowgirls with 12.1 ppg and 7.6 rpg. Junior post Tara Abdul-Hadi is putting up 11.0 ppg. Nine letterwinners returned on a squad that went 9-17 overall last year and 8-12 in the Southland Conference, finishing seventh.
