Mississippi State defeated BWBA of California 110 to 89 in an exhibition game in front of 2,179 fans at Humphrey Coliseum. MSU was led in scoring by junior college transfer Michael Ignerski who had 16 points.

About the team's defensive play during the game.
"We weren't very good defensively. We have a long way to go defensively. I thought we played hard. There were too many easy baskets. I want our team to get their concentration to where we want it to be so that we can improve defensively. We did not get it where we wanted it to be at all. We did not get enough stops and really defend that basketball with the urgency that we need to on every possession. I promise you that is something that we will work very hard on before we meet our next opponent."

Your transition made some points for you?
"We didn't get enough stops. When we did get some stops we scored in transition. (Edmund) Saunders was a bad matchup. You have a center going out and shooting threes. I believe he had several threes by halftime."

Your team rebounded well during the game?
"(BWBA) wasn't going to the ball very much. Their big men were spreading out and shooting a lot of threes. We didn't get hurt on the boards."

You used a lot of players tonight. Was that because it was an exhibition and you wanted to look at a lot of people?
"I want to look at a lot of people and give a lot of people some time. I am just now finding out what some people can do during a game. I also wanted to look at some different combinations. We played Mario (Austin) at the four and five some. We just wanted to give some people some different opportunities that you don't see in practice. I played 11 or 12 guys for sure. Eventually, we will have to cut down those numbers."

Will you do similar things in next Saturday's exhibition game?
"Yes, except I want to get better defensively. We want to be able to move on and do a few more things. I want us to get to the point soon where we can press a little bit with certain lineups, especially when we go small with Gholar at the four. We aren't that far along right now, though. We have to get better with our half-court defense. That is going to be something that we will work on this coming week. Offensively, we aren't very fluid yet but I believe this team has the ability to score some points. This team has the skill level to do some things offensively.

"I thought Ignerski played better than he did in the first two scrimmages. He let some things happen and didn't force much. He stepped up and made a few shots, something that he hasn't done in the two scrimmages. There is no question that we saw his skill level in a couple of cuts to the lane. He fed Mario Austin once and Marckell Patterson once. Those are little things that he can bring to this team as he becomes more comfortable in our system."

Talk about Timmy Bowers' play tonight.
"Timmy played well. He didn't force anything. He didn't make any spectacular plays but he stepped up and made some shots. He didn't play many minutes during the game (23 to be exact). He is a very solid basketball player. He doesn't make mistakes. He does the little things. I was pleased with the way he played tonight."

7-0 freshman center Marcus Campbell played well offensively.
"He has a knack about knowing where the basket is. He has a nice touch around that basket. I'm not concerned about his offense. He has plenty of offense. We've got to get him to the point where he can defend and rebound and play at the energy level that he needs to at this level of play. He has a mile to go. Once all that clicks, he has a chance to really help this basketball team."

Has the Roy Goffer decision been made?
"Roy got some relief on that. He will have to sit out 7.2 games. I'm not sure if he will have to sit out 7 or 8 games."

Talk about Winsome Frazier's play tonight.
"Winsome came in and made some shots. He played a little nervous at first but he is going to be a fine player for us in time."

Talk about the offense in the post tonight.
"We didn't do a very good job getting the ball into the post tonight. At halftime we scored 10 of 14 times that we went to the post."

Talk about tonight's opponent.
"It was a nice opponent to start off with. They had some players that had played and knew how to play. They made some shots. There is no question that the opponents that we play down the road will be better."
