"I thought it would be closer early in the ballgame. But we got some walks and some good at bats and got a couple of home runs to expand the league. From that point on, I thought that Brooks Dunn did a good job. It was the first start for him. We got other kids a chance to pitch, (Todd) Doolittle, (Michael) Valentine for the first time and gave (Saunders) Ramsey and (Brett) Cleveland an inning. Hopefully, we will be able to do that same thing tomorrow, although Mississippi Valley will be very competitive tomorrow. We'll start Josh Johnson tomorrow."
Talk about the importance of getting these early games in.
"With the way our schedule is we always start (the season) late. The only thing that can work against you when you start late is when there is a lot of rain. Then, you are playing double-headers but we can handle on Wednesday. But we want to play every game we can on time. We hate to be pushing more games back into the mid-part of the season. If this game had been rained out, we were prepared to play a day-night double-header tomorrow."
Where do you expect Brooks Dunn to fit in on this pitching staff?
"Right now, I think he can help us some on weekends as a reliever. He may also be one of our guys on the mid-week games. Mid-week games are almost as important as SEC weekend games. You need some quality starters for mid-week ball games. We have some fine mid-week opponents that we will be playing, Southern Miss, South Alabama, Birmingham-Southern, Memphis."
I know you don't think this team is going to be a home run hitting team, but both home runs were hit well with no wind blowing out.
"Both balls were hit hard today. Maybe the balls are juiced up. We've hit more home runs in these four games than we hit all fall and early spring. And we must have played 25 (scrimmage) games in the fall. It seemed like all fall and early winter the wind was blowing in a lot when we were playing scrimmage games. Now, the guys have a little confidence and think it's not that tough a ball park to hit one out of. They thought this (park) was a graveyard."
