MSU Upsets No. 11 Auburn, 6-4

AUBURN, Ala. - Mississippi State (25-14, 7-9 SEC) struck for six runs in the first three innings and pitchers Alan Johnson and Jamie Gant made them stand up Friday night in a series-opening 6-4 win over No. 11 Auburn (27-13, 8-8 SEC) at Plainsman Park.

Brad Corley and Tyler Scarbrough had three hits each and drove in three of the Bulldog runs between them.

State jumped on Auburn starting lefty Mike Felix (4-3) early, plating a pair of runs in the first inning when Jeffrey Rea, Steve Gendron and Brad Corley opened the game with consecutive singles.

Tyler Scarbrough belted his first home run of the season over the right field wall to extend the lead to 3-0 in the second.

State then parlayed a lead-off walk and three hits for three more runs in the third inning. Brad Jones singled in one run, Thomas Berkery delivered a sacrifice fly and Scarbrough laced a run-scoring double to give the Bulldogs a 6-0 lead in the third.

Chris Dennis replaced Felix in the third, scattering four hits 4-2/3 innings of shutout relief. John Madden finished the game, walking one and allowing one hit over the final two innings.

Junior righty Alan Johnson (3-1) no-hit Auburn through four frames before Derek Sain lined a one-out single to left in the fifth inning. Auburn scored twice in the sixth on a two-out double by Mike Hnytka and Chuck Jeroloman lofted a towering two-out home run over the left field wall to make it a 6-4 game.

The Bulldogs turned to Jamie Gant after Jeroloman's blast, and the sophomore right-hander no-hit the Tigers over the final 2-1/3 innings to earn his first save of the season. Gant walked two, one in the eighth that was later erased on an inning-ending double play.

State out-hit Auburn 11-6, with Corley and Rea extending career-best hitting streaks to 14 and 13 games respectively.

The series continues Saturday at 3 p.m.
