Class of 2005 Profile: Catcher Grey Avant

Grey Avant, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound catcher from Houston High School in Germantown, Tennessee, is one of the better juniors in the South. Gene's Page recently caught up with him for an interview.

On the Houston High School website you are listed as a first baseman/catcher. What is your primary position?
"I would think I am primarily a catcher."

How long have you played both positions?
"Last year was my first to play first base. I have always played catcher."

As a catcher, what is your time throwing down to second base?
"On my best day, I am a 2.0 (seconds) flat."

Have you grown up a fan of any particular college or colleges?
"Mississippi State. I am a Memphis football fan but I have always followed Mississippi State baseball."

How long have you known about Mississippi State baseball?
"When I first watched the College World Series, Mississippi State was in it."

Have you gone to a Mississippi State's baseball camp?
"I went to a team camp last summer. That's the only time I have gone to camp there."

Based on watching them on television and going to their camp, what kind of impressions have you formed about them?
"The campus and facilities are awesome."

What other college camps have you attended?
"As a freshman, I went to an Ole Miss camp. That is the only other one that I can think of."

What schools are sending you letters?
"Mississippi State, Arkansas, Arkansas State, Tennessee, Alabama, (UT) Chattanooga, Kentucky. I've also got three football letters."

What position do you play in football?
"Center, but I think they are recruiting me for long snapper."

What schools have sent you letters in football?
"Memphis, Carson-Newman and North Alabama."

Of the two sports, would you consider baseball as your primary sport?
"Yes sir."
