BASEBALL...

Mississippi State, needing a victory or two to put themselves into a solid spot to make the SEC baseball tournament, lost three games to Vanderbilt this past weekend in Nashville, the first time in history that Vanderbilt has swept MSU in a three-game series in Nashville.

With the losses, MSU went from being one out of 8th place to being two games out with 9 SEC games to go.

MSU, Auburn and Vanderbilt are, basically, the three teams playing for the final 8th tournament spot, with Vanderbilt two games ahead of MSU and one game ahead of Auburn.

This coming weekend MSU will host Georgia, the hottest team in the SEC right now with 9 straight victories. All but two of those 9 have been on their home field. Overall, Georgia is 7-7 on the road.

In the meantime, Vanderbilt travels to Knoxville, Tennessee to face the Volunteers, while Auburn hosts South Carolina. Tennessee is 24-5 at home, while Auburn is 19-7 at home.

MSU will have to win at least 2 to stay in contention for the 8th spot. If they should somehow sweep, something that they haven't done all year long, they could very well pull even with Vanderbilt and possibly move ahead of Auburn. More than likely the best they can hope for is to win 2 of 3 and Vanderbilt to lose 2 of 3. They have lost 7 of 9 SEC road games. Auburn could also lose 2 of 3. In fact, they have done that very thing in all three of their SEC home series.

The following weekend, it gets even tougher for the Bulldogs as the lead-leading Arkansas Razorbacks come to town. Auburn once again plays host with Georgia coming in. Vanderbilt travels to Baton Rouge to take on the LSU Tigers, another hot team.

FOOTBALL...

Coach Croom impressive...

Coach Croom has been touring the state and impressing all that hear him. MSU fans, with the baseball team underachieving, wants to hear some positive things and Coach Croom is just what the doctor ordered.

On each road stop, he has told the folks to expect a team that plays hard and never gives up. He has stated they will do the small details that will lead to winning. The players will be good citizens. He lets the fans know that he expects them to be in their seats yelling until they can't yell any longer. He wants Davis-Wade Stadium to be a place where teams fear to come.

All in all, the fans have been impressed.

Football free agent signings...

Three of MSU's seniors have signed free agent contracts; kicker Brent Smith signed with New Orleans, wide receiver Justin Jenkins signed with Philadelphia and defensive tackle Tommy Kelly signed with Oakland.

    BASKETBALL...

Courtney Fells, a 6-foot-5, 190-pound, junior small forward who plays for Shannon (MS) HS, has jumped on the recruiting scene with both barrels blazing after scoring 30 points at the Kingwood Classic last week. In a recent interview with Jeff Goodman, TheInsiders' National Recruiting Analyst, Courtney told him that he has offers from North Carolina State, MSU, Ole Miss and LSU and that North Carolina State is the leader.

    SOFTBALL...

MSU's softball team, winners of 13 of their last 15 games and 10 of their last 12 SEC games, will be playing Tennessee, the No. 2 seed, in the SEC Tournament Thursday, May 13, at the Alabama Softball Complex in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Gametime is set for 11:00 a.m.

The 7th seed Bulldogs are 35-22 and 14-15 in the SEC, while the Lady Vols are 49-12 and 20-8. Earlier this season, Tennessee took all three games in Starkville (10-1, 6-3, 5-3). At the time, MSU was in a streak where it wound up losing 7 of 9 games.

By the way, check out my front page interview with MSU signee Ragan Blake, one of the top high school players in the nation.

    TRACK...

Track team warms up in Oxford...

The track team warmed up for the upcoming SEC Outdoor Championships in Oxford, Miss., on May 13-16 by participating in the Ole Miss Open Invitational this past weekend in Ole Miss' magnificent, new $5.4 million track facility. Don't you know that it made our coaches and players sick to see such a facility while they don't even have a locker room at MSU. It just got harder for our coaches to recruit athletes that both MSU and Ole Miss recruits.

    Recruiting...

According to a poster on my free site message board, MSU track is in the hunt for one of the top 4 shot put high schoolers in the nation, Beau Burroughs of Tampa, Florida. It's between MSU, Florida, Auburn, Ga. Tech and Arizona. Beau status has shot up in recruiting circles due to his achievement the last few weeks. With most of their scholarship money depleted after signing so many athletes, I would be shocked if the Bulldog coaching staff can beat out Florida for this one.

Good news: MSU track signee Trell Kimmons ran a 9.91 seconds 100 meters this past weekend at the North Half State Championships in Columbus, Mississippi. While his time is tops in the nation by about .3 of a second, don't look for it to be officially recorded since Trell's best previous time was a hand-timed 10.38, which is equivalent to a 10.50.
