The Mississippi Stars split a couple of games at the 2004 Junior Sunbelt Classic Tournament Tuesday to take their overall record to 4-5. After defeating Canada 6-2, Mississippi lost to Oklahoma Blue 5-1. Mississippi will find out Wednesday morning what tournament position they will be playing for later that day.
The first game of the day saw the Stars jump on team Canada 2-1 after one inning. Mississippi added runs in the 4th and 6th and 2 runs in the top of the 7th. Canada added a run in the bottom of the 7th. The winning pitcher was Glendel Madden who threw 6 innings before giving way to submarine pitcher Cory Chance. Three hitters led the way for the Mississippi team: Charlie Williams was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI, while Brian Dozier and Paul Gatchell were both 2-for-3. Dozier had a double and Gatchell had two RBI. Timmy Foster was 1-for-1 with a double and RBI. Cullen Kight was 1-for-3 with a double and Todd Summerlin and Alex Ward were 1-for-3.
In game two, Mississippi and Oklahoma Blue were in a pitcher's duel until the top of the 5th inning when Oklahoma scored two to go ahead 2-0. Losing pitcher Cullen Kight, who pitched a great game up until the 5th, tired at that point and the Oklahoma hitters put their first two hitters on base. Once again Cory Chance came in in relief, this time with two men on and no outs. After getting the first batter to ground out to third and the second batter to strike out, the next batter, a big left handed hitter, hit a two-strike pitch for a two-run RBI. Oklahoma added three in the top of the 7th that put the game away. Mississippi avoided a shutout with a run in the bottom of the 7th. Taylor Walker was 1-for-2 with a double for Mississippi. Paul Gatchell continued to hit the ball well, going 1-for-3. Tyler McMullen was also 1-for-3. Scott McCrory was 1-for-1, while Todd Summerlin was 1-for-4.
Players who have hit the ball well are as follows.Paul Gatchell - Has 12 hits.
Dave Woods - 6 hits.
Brach Davis - 6 hits.
Brian Dozier - 8 hits.
Taylor Walker - 6 hits.
Todd Summerlin - Has 5 hits during the last five games.
Tournament tidbits...One scout mentioned to a friend of mine that he was really impressed with Mississippi's middle infielders. He told my friend that they looked like they have been playing together for years.
Another scout said that he really thinks Paul Gatchell, Mississippi's top hitter in the tournament, has a chance to be a power hitter down the road.
Mississippi, although they have never won the tournament, was second in 1997 and 2003.
The first Sunbelt Classic Tournament was in 1997.
After the games are concluded each day, the folks in McAllester feed all the teams on one of the fields.
Did you know that the Mississippi team uniform colors are Maroon and White?
Because they have no sponsor, each Mississippi player has to pay $300 to cover expenses. Although host families take in the kids while they at the tournament, there are still expenses such as the charter bus that is used to take the kids and coaches to the tournament and also to cover uniforms, caps and t-shirts. If you own a corporation and would like to sponsor or help sponsor next year's team, you can contact Harry Porter, the Director of the Mississippi team, via email at email@example.com.
