Class of 2005 Prospect - GA DB Yvan Banag

Yvan Banag (Buford HS in Atlanta, Ga., 5-10.5, 195, 4.3) is one of the top defensive backs in the state of Georgia for the upcoming 2004 season. Born in France, Yvan has lived in the United States since the 9th grade.

Yvan Banag Profile:

Yvan, who came to the United States when his step-father's job required him to move, is originally from France.

A soccer player in France, he started playing football almost immediately upon his arrival in the US and has been a starter since his sophomore year.

With best times of 4.29 in the forty and 10.8 in the 100 meters, Yvan caught the eye of numerous college coaches during his junior season. During the recently concluded May evaluation period, Yvan said he "received calls from Duke, Maryland, Tulane, Georgia, South Carolina, Wake Forest and Vanderbilt."

Not only did the calls roll in but he has also received several scholarship offers. "I've received written offers from Duke and Mississippi State and a verbal offer from South Carolina," said Yvan, who can bench press 315 pounds and squat 405. "My coach also told me that Wake Forest has offered me. Duke offered me in May. South Carolina offered me earlier in the summer and then Mississippi State offered me."

Several other schools have also shown interest in him. "Georgia has sent me a couple of letters. Florida, Tulane, Vanderbilt, Maryland and Georgia Tech have sent me letters," said Yvan, who is being recruited for the defensive side of the ball and also for special teams.

This summer, due to different circumstances, he has only been able to attend one camp, Duke's senior camp. While at the camp, the Duke coaches talked to him about where he would figure in their plans his freshman season. "Duke told me that I would have a chance to play early at nickel back and on special teams," said Yvan, who appears to be a solid student in the classroom.

As to which teams stand out above the rest, Yvan isn't ready to narrow it down. "That is pretty hard to say because I haven't really thought about it that much because we have so much going on."

However, he did discuss what he knows about the four schools that have offered him a scholarship.

Duke - "They are a good academic school. They have a new coaching staff and I think they will be pretty good in a couple of years."

Mississippi State "I've heard that they have a good head coach. That's all I've heard about them. I haven't gotten that much information about them."

South Carolina - "I've heard that they have a great coaching staff and that the college is pretty good."

Wake Forest - "They are like Duke, they are a good academic school. They actually win some games and are pretty good."

Although he's not ready to list his favorites, he does know what his criteria will be when he is ready to choose a college. "I want it to be a good academic school and one that has a good coaching staff," said Yvan.

When asked if distance would be a factor, he said, "distance doesn't matter that much, although it would be good if it is close so my friends, parents and coaches could come and watch me."

Look for additional updates on Yvan throughout the season.
