Late Tuesday Practice Notes

At the end of Tuesday's practice, Coach Sylvester Croom announced captains for the season-opening game with Tulane. They are senior fullback Darnell Jones on offense, senior nose tackle Ronald Fields on defense, and senior linebacker Cody Upton representing special teams.

Croom personally selected the first set of game captains. "I decided that. This was one time I didn't ask for opinions. Cody just gives everything every day and he's a great special teams player. Anything you ask him to do, he does. Darnell has really improved and is one of the most solid guys. Ron's been a good football player, through spring and fall he's only had one bad day."

*Upton, a native of Madison, Miss., was as surprised as anyone at his captain's status. "I just found out," he said, "I didn't have a clue. I was kind of like, ‘huh?' It's a good feeling, though." Upton will line up at ‘R5' on kickoff coverage, to the right of kicker Keith Andrews. "I'm just ready to get out there and bust a head!" he said.

*Offensive guard Otis Riddley was not present at Tuesday's full-contact workout. Croom preferred not to comment in detail to reporters about the sophomore's absence. "I don't totally know yet," he said of Riddley's status. "We'll wait and see." Riddley was listed as the #2 right guard, a position of concern already given the shaky injury status of Will Rogers. True soph Brian Anderson worked with the first team Tuesday. Possible backups are redshirt Royce Blackledge and freshman Roland Terry, as well as #2 right tackle Donovan Davis.

*Wide receiver Ray Ray Bivines did not attend practice Tuesday either and will not play in the opener. "Nothing has changed," Croom said. "He does have some problems with the nerve getting totally healed, but it's going to take time and it's not good enough to practice on now."

Players allowed to skip post-practice running were: offensive guard Will Rogers, offensive guard Johnny Wadley, defensive end Deljuan Robinson, and tight end Jeremy Jones.
