In singles play Saturday, Bulldog newcomer Jordan Jones moved into the quarters of Division III singles play with a win. Jones, a Tupelo, Miss., native who transferred to MSU this year from North Alabama, rallied to post a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Alex Quillis of the College of Charleston in the second round. He will meet Mercer's Arya Vafaei in Sunday quarters.
Also still alive in singles competition for MSU is Pinto. The 110th-ranked Bulldog received a walkover in his Division I consolation match Saturday when Florida's Chris Brandi withdrew. Pinto will meet Nick Lane of Auburn in the quarterfinals of that field Sunday morning.
Eliminated from singles Saturday were Carvalho, Florent Girod and Josh Irey. Carvalho and Girod both dropped consolation matches in Division I, while Irey was a three-set victim in the second round of the Division III main draw. Girod and Irey also lost a close contest in the opening round of Division II doubles.
"We had some more positives emerge today," MSU head coach Sylvain Guichard said. "Luiz and Jose played as they should in doubles, and Jordan and Josh both played good singles matches. We are getting better as each day goes by and we get more matches under our belts."
