Friday Night Lights, from producer Brian Grazer and Imagine Entertainment, chronicles the entire 1988 season of the Permian High Panthers of Odessa, TX, fighting for a state championship, and depicts the daily grind of Coach Gary Gaines' (Billy Bob Thornton) winning team and the potential destinies of its individual players.
Based on a 1990 best-seller by H. G. Bissinger, named by Sports Illustrated as one of the top five greatest sports stories of all times, this movie paints a vivid portrait of Odessa, (and places like it all across the South), where, once a week in the fall, the town and its dreams come alive beneath the dazzling and disorienting Friday night lights of the 20,000-seat Ratliff Stadium.
Friday Night Lights illuminates the hopes and dreams of Odessa's townsfolk. For the young men of the team, every moment, very play is a chance to transcend their small town and the fleeting fulfillment of a gridiron stardom whose pinnacle may be reached by the time they turn 18.
Starkville, like so many other small towns in the south where high school football becomes a passion with the start of the fall, is one of several venues chosen for the national premiere. The movie opens on screens nationwide on Friday, October 8th.
