Class of 2005 Prospect - MS OF/1B Cade Hoggard

As reported here a few weeks ago, Cade Hoggard, a 6-2.5, 210-pound right-hand hitting outfielder/first baseman who plays for Oxford (MS) High School, has committed to Mississippi State. Cade, who hit .380 with 6 home runs and 50+ RBI in 30+ games earned All-Area, 1st-team All-District and the Oxford Eagle Player of the Year last year, talked about his commitment and why he chose to go ahead and commit.

Cade Hoggard Profile:

What college baseball camps did you attend this past summer?
"I went to (Mississippi) State, Ole Miss and Delta State."

What teams showed interest in your during the recruiting process?
"Delta State talked to me at their camp. Ole Miss and Mississippi State called the first day college coaches could call."

Were you expecting those teams to call?
"I kind of expected Ole Miss (to call) because they had come to a couple of my games here in Oxford. I went to the Mississippi State camp and had a pretty good camp, so I was hoping they would call."

Since you committed prior to being able to take official visits, did you take any unofficial visits to any colleges?
"I visited all three campuses, Delta State, Ole Miss and Mississippi State. The last couple of weeks (in August) I have gone to all of them. I went to Delta State last Monday (August 23), Mississippi State the Monday before that (August 16) and Ole Miss prior to school starting."

Have those three schools offered scholarships?
"Yes sir."

When did they offer?
"They offered when I visited them."

Did you expect offers from those three schools?
"Up until this summer, I thought I was going to Delta State. I had gone to their camp two years in a row. Then, all of sudden Ole Miss and Mississippi State stepped in. I feel I can play at their level, so I decide to try."

With them jumping in at the last minute, you must have really impressed them at their camps. Did they indicate to you what they like about you?
"Everyone says I have real quick hands for a person my size. And I'm a power-hitter who also has good speed for my size. I have a 6.9 (second) 60 (yard dash)."

What was it about Mississippi State that made you feel it was the right place for you?
"The tradition that they have. Plus, I have always wanted to get out of town since this is the only place I really know and Mississippi State seemed right."

What were some things that stood out about Mississippi State when you went on your unofficial visit?
"They have a great campus. I like how highly they treat their baseball players. Everything seemed so new to me."

Who was your primary recruiter at Mississippi State? And what did you think about him and Coach Polk?
"Coach Raffo. Coach Raffo is a serious, get-to-business type guy. Coach Polk seemed like a really nice guy who likes to have fun. I could tell that after being at their camp. It's good to have both of those type coaches."

What has it been like for a kid from Oxford, the home of MSU's main rival Ole Miss, since you committed to Mississippi State?
"A bunch of my friends are kind of upset because that is where they are going and they won't get to see me that much. They said they will probably come to see me play some. All of the baseball players are very supportive because they went to the Mississippi State camp and really liked it. I think they would like to go there if they could."
