State's Irey Advances in All-American Prequalies

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Mississippi State true freshman Josh Irey has advanced into the third round of the prequalifying stages of the ITA All-American Hardcourt Championships after Friday's first day of action. The All-American, being held at Chattanooga's Champions Club, is the first major of the college tennis year.

Irey, a native of Clewiston, Fla., opened the day with a tough victory over Nebraska's Karl Jones. After the players split the first two sets, Jones gained a 5-2 lead in the third. But Irey fought back to win the close match 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(6), staving off a match point along the way.

Irey's second-round opponent, Texas Tech's Bojan Szumanski, defaulted his match, propelling Irey into Saturday's third round. Irey will meet Oklahoma's Lee Gregg at 10 a.m. ET Saturday in that contest. Irey must win three more matches in prequalifying to advance to the qualifying rounds of the All-American, which begin Monday.

In other prequalifying singles action Friday, State juniors Florent Girod and Jordan Jones both fell in straight sets in the first matches of the tournament. Girod, who received a first-round bye in the morning, dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to San Diego State's Daniel Jung in the second round. Jones was a 6-3, 7-5 victim of Texas-San Antonio's Dennis Andrade in the first round.

In addition to Irey's singles action Saturday morning, he and Girod will also begin doubles competition in the prequalifying draw Saturday afternoon.
