Irey and Girod Fall in All-American Prequalies

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Mississippi State's remaining entries in the prequalifying stages of the Icy Hot/ITA All-American Championships were eliminated from that draw Saturday. The All-American, being held at Chattanooga's Champions Club, is the first major of the college tennis year.

In third-round singles action Saturday, Bulldog rookie Josh Irey, who had posted his first career win as a Bulldog Friday, was beaten by Oklahoma's Lee Gregg 6-4, 6-0.

In doubles play, junior Florent Girod teamed with Irey, but the pair dropped an 8-1 decision to San Diego State's tandem of Armando Carrascosa and Daniel Jung in their first match in that field. The Bulldog duo had received a first-round bye and then reached the third round via a walkover Saturday in the second round.

State continues play at the All-American Championships Monday, when Bulldogs Luiz Carvalho and Jose-Carlos Pinto begin action in the singles qualifying rounds. They will each be looking to win three consecutive matches to advance to the main draw of the tournament, which starts Thursday. Ranked 13th nationally together in doubles, Carvalho and Pinto are already entered into the tournament's 32-team main draw of doubles.
