CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - After posting wins in the first round Monday, Mississippi State tennis players Luiz Carvalho and Jose-Carlos Pinto fell in their respective second-round contests Tuesday in the qualifying rounds at the Icy Hot/ITA All-American Championships. The All-American, being held at Chattanooga's Champions Club, is the first major of the college tennis year.
Carvalho and Pinto were gunning for one of the 64 spots in the All-American's main draw and were in need of three wins each to do so. Carvalho fell 6-3, 6-4 to Georgia's 60th-ranked John Isner in Tuesday's second round, while Pinto, ranked 110th nationally, dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Ohio State's Scott Green.
Ranked 13th nationally together in doubles, Carvalho and Pinto were already entered into the All-American's 32-team main draw of doubles. Competition in that field begins Thursday.
