MSU Tennis Duo Falls in ITA Championships

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Mississippi State's 13th-ranked doubles team of Luiz Carvalho and Jose-Carlos Pinto saw their run in the Icy Hot/ITA All-American Championships come to an end in the semifinals Saturday, as the State pair dropped an 8-3 decision to Ohio State's 34th-ranked team of Scott Green and Ross Wilson. The All-American, being held at Chattanooga's Champions Club, is the first major of the college tennis year.

Saturday's loss ended a great week of play for the MSU tandem, as they posted three victories, including an upset of the nation's second-ranked doubles team in the quarterfinals Friday. Carvalho and Pinto are now 7-3 this fall.

"Luiz and Jose were ready to play today and they played a good match. The Ohio State guys just played a little better," MSU head coach Sylvain Guichard said. "But we are very proud of what they were able to accomplish this week. They showed what they are capable of doing when they focus themselves for every match."

The semifinal showing at the All-American this week assures Carvalho and Pinto of a spot in the ITA National Indoor Championships, college's second major event of the year, to be held Nov. 4-7 in Ann Arbor, Mich. Only 16 doubles teams from around the country make the National Indoor field.

MSU men's tennis continues fall action next weekend, Oct. 14-18, at the ITA Southeast Region Indoor Championships in Memphis, Tenn. That tournament is the qualifying event for November's National Indoor field.
