Power and Campbell Lead Bulldogs in Scrimmage

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Seniors Shane Power and Marcus Campbell scored 33 and 29 points, respectively, to lead the Mississippi State Bulldogs in the team's first public intrasquad basketball scrimmage of the 2004-05 preseason held Saturday morning at MSU's Humphrey Coliseum.

The reigning SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Power tallied 16 of his club-high 33 points in the team's opening 20-minute session on 6-of-9 shooting from the field, including 4-of-5 accuracy from beyond the three-point arc. Having averaged 9.7 points per game and established a new single-season school standard by hitting 48 percent of his 3-pointers a year ago, Power finished Saturday's scrimmage by hitting 11-of-23 shots overall from the field, including 6-of-13 treys, and a perfect 5-of-5 from the charity stripe. In 47 minutes of turnover-free basketball, the Crown Point, Ind., native was also credited with five rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Saturday's two-hour men's basketball scrimmage on the MSU campus was comprised of an opening 20-minute period and followed by a pair of 12-minute segments and a closing six-minute stint.

Campbell, who participated on a goodwill tour this past summer with the SCORE International College All-Stars in the Dominican Republic, totaled his 29 points on 12-of-20 field-goal shooting and 5-of-7 from the line. The Winter Haven, Fla., native also collected 14 rebounds from his post position.

Senior guard Winsome Frazier totaled 21 points, nine rebounds, six assists and six steals on the day, while junior center Wesley Morgan added 20 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the field in addition to grabbing 13 boards.

Preseason National Player of the Year candidate and reigning SEC Player of the Year Lawrence Roberts was the team's leading rebounder during the scrimmage with 17 caroms. The senior forward from Houston also contributed 16 points on 4-of-14 from the field and 8-of-11 from the charity stripe.

Freshman forward Walter Sharpe of Birmingham paced the Bulldog newcomers with 17 points on 4-of-6 field-goal shooting and 9-of-12 from the line. Sophomore point guard Gary Ervin totaled 15 points, five assists, five rebounds and four steals, while fellow second-year backcourt performer Dietric Slater added a dozen points and nine boards.

MSU fans will have another opportunity to preview coach Rick Stansbury's defending SEC Champions next Saturday (Nov. 6), as the Bulldogs play host to the University of Panamericana out of Mexico City. State's lone exhibition contest of the preseason is slated for a 1 p.m. tip-off at Humphrey Coliseum, and there will be no charge for admission.

The Bulldogs will officially begin their 93rd season of basketball competition at the season-opening Coaches vs. Cancer Classic, Nov. 11-12, to be held at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex.
