Now, on with the interview.
Do you have time to talk or this is a bad time?
"No, it is fine."
Obviously you visited Mississippi State this weekend. What was your impression of State?
"I went down to Mississippi State this weekend and was really impressed. I liked all of the coaches and it is really nice. I had a good host, Chris McNeil. He was a nice guy. I was really impressed with Mississippi State."
You've grown up an Ole Miss fan, haven't you?
Did that make it a little different experience for you?
"It was. I guess I went down there with a little of Ole Miss in me and how I thought about State a long time ago. Then, I was like whoa! I look at Mississippi State totally different now. I was really impress. You know, being around Ole Miss up here, you kind of hear stuff about it down there. Sometime people say stuff about it down there and it is not true at all. It is a nice place down there. Coach Sherrill is a super guy. The offensive line coaches were real nice."
The coach that recruits you is offensive line coach Terry Lewis. Isn't that correct?
Was that the first time that you have really gotten to talk to him a lot?
"No sir, Coach Lewis has come by the school and talked to me before."
What is your impression of him?
"He is a nice guy, too. I really like him a lot."
How did State move in your rankings of schools?
"They have moved up, but I really don't know how they compare to the other schools. They are my second visit. I was really impressed with Mississippi State, I won't lie to you."
What school was your first official visit?
How does State compare to LSU?
"They are up there. They are about the same, maybe. I like Mississippi State, but I liked LSU a lot too. To be quite honest with you, I haven't really sat down and compared the two yet. I am just taking it one visit at a time. I have three visits in three weeks and I didn't really think about it over the Christmas break."
What were your parents' impressions of Mississippi State?
"They are both Ole Miss fans. They were really impressed. They liked Coach Sherrill a lot. We all said we see State in a totally different way now."
I saw you during the basketball game. What was your impression of the game.
"To be honest with you, I am a North Carolina basketball fan. I like the Tarheels. I really didn't care who won, but I liked the way that State didn't quit. It was a good atmosphere. They really have some good fans. The fans never quit yelling for them."
Were there any things that really stood out about the visit?
"I really, really like the offensive coordinator, Sparky Woods. He is just a class guy and I like him a lot. We talked about Murray State where my brother plays. I liked all of the coaches to be honest with you. They were all nice guys. I liked my host (Chris McNeil) a lot, because he was kind of like me."
[Because there have been so many things written about Jay and whether he is still committed to Ole Miss, I wanted to give Jay the opportunity to put in his own words exactly what his recruiting situation is at this time. Here is my question and his response.-Gene]
Jay, there have been all kinds of things written about whether or not you are still committed to Ole Miss. Tell me in your own words what your status is at this time.
"Well, I'll put it to you like this, I am an Ole Miss fan and I like Ole Miss, but I am looking at other places and I am totally open. If I am more impressed with somewhere else, I am going to go there. I won't know anything until after I take all of my visits. Plus, I go to Florida and they don't even have a coach. I backed off of Ole Miss, because if I like somewhere else better, I didn't want to feel like I stabbed them in the back."
Jay and I talked about the internet message boards a little. Here is what he said about them.
"They are dogging me on (one message board), but I really don't read them. My brother comes back and tells me (what is on them). I could care less what they say. Once I sign, I will be forgotten anyway. All these people around here are not going to be with me when I am running and sweating at practice. I am not worried about them."
Thank you, Jay. Good luck and have fun on your other visits.
"Thank you, sir."
