ROOSEVELT TATE TALKS ABOUT HIS MSU VISIT

Mississippi State's football coaches seem to be making a serious effort at recruiting some of the top football prospects in the city of Memphis this year. One of those prospects, who recently visited MSU, is DE Roosevelt Tate from Hamilton HS. Roosevelt is a 6-4, 248-lb. pass rush specialist who has been timed at running a 4.7 40. I called Mr. Tate to find out how his weekend visit to MSU went. This is what he had to say:

I heard you visited Mississippi State this weekend, is that true?
"Yes sir."

How did you enjoy the visit?
"It was great, I had a good time."

Tell me a little about what you all did there this weekend.
"We didn't do much, just hung out with the players and laid back."

Who was your host player this weekend?
"Nate (Jackson). I don't remember his last name, but he played outside linebacker and defensive end."

Did you spend any time with your position coach?
"Yes sir, with Coach Hendrick."

What did you think about coach Hendrick?
"He's nice, a good guy. I spent about 20 minutes with him."

Did he tell you anything about what you would play?
"Yea, he told me I would play line, defensive end. A pass rusher."

Is pass rushing your specialty?
"Yes, sir."

How many sacks did you have this year?
"14."

Did they offer you a scholarship this weekend?
"Yes sir."

Who offered it to you?
"Coach Sherrill. But they had offered me before."

So you spent some time with Coach Sherrill. What did you think of him?
"He was a good guy. I liked him. He was straight to the point."

What would you say were the highlights of the weekend visit?
"I would say when they showed us some film of each other playing, and when they took us in the locker room and had jerseys with our numbers and names already on them."

So you watched video of the other players in action?
"Yes."

Of all the players there who you saw on video, which ones impressed you the most?
"Brandon Jenkins and (sorry, couldn't make out the name)."

Were both of those players from Memphis?
"Yes, and a running back that was there. I don't remember his name (Jamal Pittman)."

What other recruits did you hang out with?
"Antonio Sanders and James (Cochran)."

What did you think of them?
"I liked them. They were pretty good guys."

Have you visited any other schools?
"The University of Memphis."

How would you compare the two visits?
"I would rather not say."

You don't want to say which visit you enjoyed the most?
"No, not right now."

OK. What did you think of the basketball game?
"That was a good game, really. At first I thought they were going to lose, and then they came back and won. Everything was good except for the gym. It was kind of hot in there. But other than that, it was straight."

We have you listed at 6-4, 240. Is that right?
"I have gained a little weight. I'm up to 248 right now."

As a player, what are your strengths and weaknesses?
"My strengths - I've got good reaction off the ball, I've got quickness and I usually beat all the guys I go up against."

Are you leaning anywhere right now - do you have a favorite?
"I would rather not say right now."

So you have a favorite but you don't want to say who it is?
"Yea, I have a favorite (laugh)."

Are you taking any other visits?
"I'm going to MTSU this weekend."

When do you think you will announce your decision?
"Probably some time at the end of this month."

Thanks for your time Roosevelt, I appreciate it.
"Anytime, anytime."
