GA WR/QB Marcus Jones

Marcus Jones, a 6-4, 210-pound wide receiver/quarterback who plays for Southeast Whitfield High School in Dalton, GA., talked to Gene's Page about his official visit to Mississippi State this past weekend.

Marcus Jones Profile:

What position is Mississippi Stare recruiting you for?
"Mississippi State is recruiting me primarily at wide receiver."

What do you want to play in college, wide receiver or quarterback?
"Honestly, right now, I'm up to playing both. I primarily want to play quarterback, but I can play receiver, too."

What schools have you officially visited and who do you plan on visiting?
"Mississippi State was my first official visit. My next official visit is to Kentucky January 7th."

Who else are you considering for official visits?
"Ole Miss, NC State, Duke and Texas A&M."

Do you plan on taking all five of your visits before making a decision as to which school you will sign with?
"Most likely yes, but you never know. It might come up where I take two and decide to go to Mississippi State or somewhere else."

What colleges have offered scholarships?
"Duke, Kentucky, NC State and Mississippi State."

Who would you say are your top five schools?
"I won't say them in order but my top five are Kentucky, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Duke and Texas A&M."

Did you know much about Mississippi State prior to your official visit?
"Not much. I knew a little bit because I came in for an unofficial visit when they played the University of Alabama at Birmingham. I met Coach Beamer, Coach Croom and Coach McCorvey. I met quite a few of the coaching staff, but I didn't get to see much of the campus. So, I left not knowing much about them."

Talk about your overall impressions of your Mississippi State visit?
"I loved it."

Obviously, something made a good impression on you. What was it?
"The coaching staff in general, then Coach Croom. He is just amazing as a person and as a coach. Then, they showed me the facilities and introduced me to the players. I loved every bit of it. It was just great."

What is it about Coach Croom that you like so much?
"Because of how he was able to related to me. I understand where he is coming from. I felt like he kind of took me under his wing from the moment when I first got there."

What was your impressions of the players that you met at MSU?
"It was like a family atmosphere. They were like brothers."

What did you think about the Arkansas-Mississippi State game?
"It was a well played game. They played a hard fought game and just came up a little short. I think they got a little messed over with those touchdowns. I feel like they scored, but the referees didn't give them to them."

Did MSU move up your recruiting list after this visit?
"Yes, they definitely moved up. I have two different categories because some schools are recruiting me for quarterback and some for wide receiver. For wide receiver, they are at the top of my list."

Did the MSU coaches tell you what they like about you?
"They like my class and my character. That's what he (Coach Croom) told me today. He also said I have the ability to start next year."

Do you think Coach Croom is going to be successful at Mississippi State?
"Oh yeah."
