Mississippi State basketball continues to show the depth of this team. This past weekend, State defeated a pretty good LSU team 84-61 behind the play of 6-5, 210-lb. redshirt freshman, reserve swingman Ontario Harper's 16 points.
For those of you who don't know Ontario's history, he took the long road to get to State. After signing with MSU after completing his senior season at Clinton HS in 1998, he attended Winchendon Prep School in Massachusetts due to academics. From there, he attended a junior college to complete his eligibility requirements in 1999-2000. During his true freshman year at State (2000-2001), he injured his wrist and gained a medical redshirt year. Now, after waiting three years, he is finally showing folks why he was considered one of the top 75 players in the nation his senior year of high school.
Ontario is not the only youngster playing significant minutes this season. True freshman 7-0 center Marcus Campbell has also earned more minutes during the past few games. And, of course, sophomores Mario Austin (starter) and Timmy Bowers (started a few games) have been major contributors the entire season. Then, you also have sophomore Lincoln Smith contributing important minutes.
And don't forget sophomore Roy Goffer and the very talented true freshman swingman Winsome Frazier waiting their turns on the bench and 7-1 center Wesley Morgan redshirting this season.
With two juniors (Zimmerman, Ignerski) and three seniors (Gardner, Gholar, Patterson) contributing significant minutes this season, this Bulldog team will only get better and better the next two seasons.
In attendance at Saturday's game were two relatively unknown but very, very talented Mississippi high school juniors, 6-5, 205-lb. Lamar Sanders and Currye Todd. Lamar has scored 60 points in one game this year and over 40 in several others. Currye is a top two-guard. I will have more on both of these players later.
RPI remains steady...
Based on the most recent RPI ranking, Mississippi State's 24th ranking was fifth in the SEC, behind Kentucky (6th), Alabama (9th), Georgia (10th) and Florida (18th). Other SEC schools in the top fifty in RPI rankings include Arkansas (28th), Vanderbilt (34th) and Mississippi (41st).
Mississippi State baseball has their first practice a week from today. The Diamond Dogs are ranked in the top 25 in all four polls. They are ranked 17th by Baseball America, 20th by Baseball Weekly/ESPN, 21st by NCBWA/CSN and 23rd by Collegiate Baseball.
Mississippi State has 26 public commitments. Mississippi State continues to be in the hunt for other standout players such as Parade All-American selections Marvin Byrdsong, a linebacker from Longview, Texas, and Nick Turner, a RB/DB from Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta. Byrdsong will choose between Arkansas and Mississippi State, while Turner has Georgia, Mississippi State and Maryland on his final list. Taylorsville High School defensive lineman Timmy Duckworth, ranked the 9th best player on The Clarion-Ledger's 10 most wanted list, officially visited MSU this past weekend. According to his mother, he has narrowed his list to two. She said she did not know who were the final two schools. He has officially visited State, Auburn, Ole Miss and Southern Miss.
One other highly prized recruit, Clarksdale High School's Darren Williams, an MSU commitment and another member of the Parade All-American team, officially visited Ole Miss this past weekend. He told me he enjoyed himself, but was still firmly committed to Mississippi State.
One other MSU commitment, Jerious Norwood, Brandon High School's outstanding running back, was also a Parade All-American selections.
