New Mexico State regained the lead in the fourth, putting runners on the corners with one out, then plated both on a Shayne Gipson two-out triple. State cut the lead to one in the fourth on an RBI single by Krystal Tillman, then tied it up for the second time in the seventh on an RBI single by Wilkerson.
New Mexico State took the lead for the third time in the top of the eighth on a two-run homer by Melanie Briggs, but Mississippi State responded with a pair of runs to tie it up for the third time in the bottom of the frame before Wilkerson's dramatics.
For the tournament, Iyhia McMichael and Kellie Wilkerson led the Bulldog hitters with .462 and .417 batting averages. Iyhia also knocked in 8 runs, while Kellie hit two home runs. Overall, MSU hit .312 in the tournament
Kasey Whitehead was the pitching leader for the Bulldogs, going 3-0 with an ERA of 0.71. She also struck out 15 batters in 19.2 innings, while giving up just 13 hits and walking 3. Teams batted .183 against her.
Mississippi State will return to action on Wednesday when they return home to host visiting Belmont in an afternoon doubleheader at the Mississippi State Softball Field. First pitch of the twinbill is set for 1 p.m. The Bulldogs will then host theBulldog Classic Tournamet this weekend.
