OSU used a pair of walks and an RBI double to left by Doug Deeds to take a 1-0 lead off MSU starter Paul Maholm (0-1). Maholm left the game with two out in the fourth, giving up seven hits, walking five and striking out five during his first appearance of the campaign.
Christian Snavely reached with a bunt single in the fourth, advanced on a passed ball and scored the Buckeyes' second run on Brett Garrard's single through the left side of the infield. Snavely finished the day with three hits.
Chad Henry enjoyed a career-best 3-for-4 outing for MSU and singled in a run in the fourth inning that trimmed the OSU lead to 2-1. But the Buckeyes stretched the lead when Joe Wilkins delivered a two-run singles in the fifth and seventh innings.
Matthew Maniscalco doubled and scored the Bulldogs' final run on a Jason Burkley's second single of the game.
Junior lefty Steve Dowe replaced Maholm in the fifth, and Ryan Carroll worked the final 2-2/3 innings.
