Coach Henry, tell me a little about Lamar as a person.
"He is a great kid, very coachable, well-mannered and has a great work ethic. One of the strongest points about Lamar is he will listen to you. His leadership skills are like no other. He just does what it takes to win."
What are some of his strong points on the court?
"He has a good mid-range game and he can get off a dribble and shoot well. He is good at creating his own shot. He is also very good at seeing the floor. Plus, you add his 43 inch one-step vertical to that and you have a great player. He can almost get eye level with the basket. He has scored 40 or more points ten times and has even scored 60 once this year in a double-overtime game against Myrtle."
He seems to be an unknown among most recruiting experts. Is there a reason for that?
"Lamar had a knee injury last year that kept him out all season. He may have been able to play late in the year, but we wanted to make sure he was a 100% before we put him back on the floor. You could already see his skill level. He also grew about seven inches the last two years. When I went in for this job interview about two years ago, Lamar was close to 6' and only weighed 135 to 140 pounds. He has worked hard in the weight room and done the things necessary to improve himself. Last year, while he was out, he watched the other players and learned from them. That has made him a much better player this year."
How does he score points, insider or outside or both?
"Really inside and out. The game where he scored 60 points, he was six of eight from the three-point line."
Lamar is 6-6 and 210 pounds. Is he more of a forward or guard?
"I play him at different positions. He has very good quickness, good ball skills and great footwork. I believe he is a guard."
Have many coaches started contacting you about him?
"Although I have talked to a few coaches about him, Lamar didn't play any last year so he is really just now surfacing. He had a great year this season, averaging 31.8 points per game (31 games) and 16 to 17 boards a game. He also averaged about 4 or 5 assists per game."
You are a fairly young guy (Coach Henry is 26 years old), but I'm sure you've seen a lot of great players in your time. How do you compare his skill level and talent to other players that you have seen in Mississippi?
"He is one of the best swingmen and guards in the state right now. Like I said, he is an unknown because he didn't play last year. He is starting to get the recognition that he deserves."
Thank you, Coach Henry.
Your coach said you have grown seven inches since your freshman year? Did that effect your play?
"No sir. Even though I grew a lot in the past two years, I adjusted to it pretty easily."
Did you play much as a freshman?
"I didn't play much at first, but started mid-way through the season."
How did you injure yourself where you couldn't play your sophomore year?
"I was going up for a dunk in practice and messed up my knee."
Are you now fully recovered from that injury?
Your coach said you can play inside or out. Do you have a preference?
"I like to play both. I'm just going out there and having fun."
Although Coach Henry said you are still basically an unknown, have you started receiving letters from colleges yet?
"Yes sir, it is unreal. It is like I'm a kid in a candy store. Although I enjoy receiving the letters, I don't let them go to my head."
Name a few of the colleges that have sent you letters?
"Ole Miss, Colorado, Mississippi State, Southeastern Louisiana, Austin Peay, LSU, Arkansas, Southern Illinois, and a lot of others."
How would you describe yourself as a player?
"My strength is I'm very quick off the dribble. And I just enjoy playing the game of basketball."
Have you grown up a fan of any particular school?
Have you unofficially visited any schools?
"I have gone to an Ole Miss game as well as a few Mississippi State games."
Thank you, Lamar.
