The insurance runs were needed as ULM plated a pair of runs on three hits and had the tying run at second base when Young retired pinch-hitter Jack Skaggs on an infield groundout.
Matthew Maniscalco extended his season-opening hit streak to five games in the third inning with a two-run single up the middle off ULM starter Matt Guillory that put MSU on top 2-1. Guillory fanned five and allowed six hits in six innings.
In the fifth Casey Long delivered his second double of the game and scored on an infield ground ball to put State up 3-1. The Indians answered an inning later with a walk and a two-out home run by Joey Wolfe that knotted the score at 3-3.
Young, in his 50th career appearance, struck out six and scattered seven hits while walking one.
The Bulldogs return to action Friday (4 p.m.) at Dudy Noble Field, Polk-DeMent Stadium, opening a three-game series against Jacksonville (Ala.) State (6-5) and a seven-game homestand. Mississippi State also battles the JSU Gamecocks Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
