MSU baseball notes.

  • Of MSU's nine starting position players during yesterday's game, five were either freshmen (2) or sophomores (3).
  • After scoring first in yesterday's game, MSU is now 28-4 this season when putting runs on the scoreboard first.
  • The five home runs hit by Mississippi State during yesterday's game against FAU were the most by a MSU team since they hit 6 against Nebraska in the 1999 Columbus NCAA Regional.
  • The two home runs hit by Brad Corley during the game were both on the first pitch thrown to him. The other three home runs hit by Joseph McCaskill, Brad Jones and Mitch Moreland were each hit on the second pitch.
  • The six RBI by Brad Corley was a career high.
  • MSU has now hit 11 home runs in 9 neutral site games this season. That is a third of the 33 home runs that they have hit the entire season.
  • Of the 8 walks by FAU pitchers, 5 scored.
  • Sophomore DH Joseph McCaskill, with his two hits yesterday, has hit .447 (17-of-38) since the second game of the SEC series against Ole Miss in Oxford. Prior to that, he was 5-of-17 for the season.
  • Junior Jeff Butts, selected the MVP in last weekend's SEC Tournament, has now hit .533 (8-of-15) in the five postseason games, after going 1-of-1 yesterday.
  • MSU has committed just 2 errors in their five postseason games.
  • Of MSU's five postseason victories, five different players have knocked in the game winning RBI (Jones, LaNinfa, Berkery, Rea and Corley).
  • MSU's opponent Saturday, Miami, is ranked 11th, 13th, 13th and 17th in the four national polls. The game will be the 14th in the last 19 games that MSU has faced a ranked opponent. MSU is 8 and 5 in the previous 13 games.
  • As for where MSU is ranked, they are currently 19th, 30th, 21st and 33rd in the same polls.
  • With the victory, MSU is now 17-7 in NCAA Regional opening games.
  • MSU has now won 13 of their last 18 games, including 5 in a row.
  • Although it's not MSU-related, the SEC teams in the NCAA Regionals were 8 and 0 during Friday's games. One other SEC team, Florida, had its game delayed until Saturday due to inclement weather.
