Class of 2006 Prospect - MS RB Derrick Davis

Derrick Davis, a 6-0, 210-pound senior running back who plays for Meridian (MS) High School, had a scare during spring practice after suffering an ACL injury to his knee. Being a running back and suffering that kind of injury would put a scare in the mind of anybody. But being a highly recruited running back like Davis, the scare is a little more intense. Derrick talked about the injury and the reaction of the college coaches that were recruiting him at the time he suffered the injury.

Derrick Davis Profile:

During a practice near the end of May, May 28th in fact, Derrick went down on a tackle by one of his teammates. He was just a few days from heading to Starkville, Mississippi to attend the combine held on the Mississippi State campus.

Instead of attending the combine, he was preparing to have surgery on his knee. Since then, he has been in rehab.

"The rehab has gone alright," said Davis. And, despite the injury, his recruitment is going alright as well. "I've receiving letters just about every day from the schools. In their letters, they have all said that the injury doesn't matter to them."

He not only continues to receive numerous letters, but he also received several recruiting calls during the spring evaluation period.

"The schools that have offered me and Tennessee, LSU and West Virginia all called," said Davis, who has offers from Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Auburn and Oklahoma State.

Although the injury will prevent him from doing much at college football camps this summer, he's still attending several.

"I just went to Ole Miss last weekend," said Davis, a consensus first-team All-State selection last season. "I'm supposed to go to (Mississippi) State Sunday. (Meridian teammates) Cordera Eason, Roshaad Byrd and Brandon Davis are also supposed to go. I'm also going to Auburn. That's pretty much it."

Davis has a tentative list of schools that he favors.

"The schools that are recruiting me are my top schools, Mississippi State, Auburn, Ole Miss, LSU and Tennessee," said Davis.

When asked if any stood out above the others or were they all medium, Davis said, "they are all medium."

Although he didn't go into specifics about each school, he did explain the reason he liked them.

"I like the coaches, the football program and that they aren't too far away," said Davis.

One school that has offered a scholarship, but didn't make his top 5 list was Oklahoma State. He explained why he left them off.

"I don't really know about them because I don't know much about the school," said Davis.
