"He has committed to Mississippi State," said Stephanie. "I called it in. I am really excited because I know he really wants to play football and get his MBA so that he can run a business."
Most of the time, after a commitment, the talk is about football, but Marcus is not your typical youngster. He personifies what a student-athlete should be.
"He is one of those kind of kids who has known what he wants to do since he was in the 8th grade," said Stephanie. "He came to me one day and told me that he wants to be a marketing research analyst. He had to explain it to me because I was like, 'you want to do what?' He thinks he can sell people on ideas that will make their businesses work. He has stuck with that and last year he told me that he wants to get his MBA. He is very focused on that and wants to get a good education. He works really hard and has been successful, so far."
And he isn't just focused and successful on the football field, but in the classroom as well.
"He is a straight A student," said his dad, Thomas Washington. "Right now, he is in the ROTC leadership camp."
Stephanie explained why the MSU coaching staff decided to offer a scholarship to Marcus last Tuesday (June 7th).
"They said that he would fit into their defensive scheme," said Stephanie. "And that he is good at what he does and that is what they are looking for."
Although they were the first to offer, MSU isn't the only school that has been expressing an interest in Marcus.
"I spoke with him last night (June 9th) and he mentioned something about the Air Force Academy," said Thomas. "Air Force is interested in him partly due to the ROTC. Northwestern is also interested in Marcus, but they told Coach O'Quin they want to come down and see him play more cover defense. TCU has been writing him for a couple of months and he has mentioned that he would like to go to their football camp. Kansas State sent him a questionnaire."
As for which schools Marcus was interested in, prior to his commitment to MSU, his dad mentioned several schools to me last week.
"He is interested in Kansas State, Ohio State, Colorado Mississippi State and Air Force," said Thomas, who is surprised that this is happening so quickly and that Marcus has already received his first offer. " I know he is interested in Mississippi State because when I asked him if this was what he wanted, he cut me off and said, 'yes, yes', so he is really enthusiastic about them offering."
Previously announced MSU commitments.
