Harris, who very likely will be one of the top senior pitchers in the state of Mississippi this coming baseball season, is slight in stature, but has a strong arm for a man his size. The night I saw him pitch he was throwing in the 86 range consistently and topped out at 91. Harris said 91 was not the norm for him, but he has hit close to that before.
"The highest that I have topped out was 89," said Harris, who is 5-11 and weighs 160 pounds. "And I didn't think I was throwing that hard."
His fastball is just one of five pitches that he has in his repertoire.
"I have five pitches," said Harris. "I have a two-seamer and four-seamer fastball, a curveball, a changeup, a slider and a split-finger. My out pitch is a changeup to lefties and maybe a slider on righties."
New Hope head baseball coach Stacy Hester knew early on what he had with Harris. In fact, he let Harris pitch a little as an 8th grader, a rarity at New Hope.
"I dressed out my eight grade year and went 2 and 0," said Harris. "My coach told me that I was probably the only (8th grader) to do it. My freshman year I went 3-0 and my sophomore year I went 9-0. This year, I went 10-2. I was 23-0 going into a district matchup at Itawamba (AHS) and they gave me my first loss."
With a strong arm, good control and a 24-2 record at one of the top high school baseball programs in Mississippi, Harris has caught the eye of at least one college.
"Ole Miss and I talk back and forth with emails," said Harris. "There's nothing major from any other school besides Ole Miss. Mississippi State has sent a questionnaire. Alabama sent me a questionnaire with a letter saying that I can't be contacted until July 1st."
And Harris has his sights set on July 1st, as do most high school senior baseball prospects.
"I'm just ready for July 1st to get here, so I can see who is interested and who is not interested," said Harris, who hasn't grown up a fan of any college. "I'm really opened to anything right now."
