Mississippi State head football coach Sylvester Croom is looking for talented linebackers to shore up his linebacking corps, a weak point on last year's team. And he's set his sites directly on Pascagoula High School linebacker Domonic Hopson, so much so that Domonic was faxed a scholarship offer in early February. The problem is Domonic didn't find out about it until July 6th.
I know I've got your attention now. I'll let Domonic explain exactly what happened.
"They talked to my coach the other day and told him that they sent (the written offer) to him by fax in early February," he said. "They didn't have my home address, so they faxed it to him at the school. He said he must have misplaced it. They are going to send another one."
Now that he finally realizes he has an offer from Mississippi State, what is his opinion of them?
"My (head) coach (Dan Bland) went there," said the 6-3, 235-pound Hopson. "That is a big plus because it would be nice to go where he went. He talks about how much fun he had at State. I also like Coach Croom. He seems like he is going to get things turned around up there. I like (MSU assistant) Coach (Freddie) Kitchens. They are good people. I really like State.
"I really want to go up there and see the campus and learn more about them, because I don't really know much about the school. I want to go to one of their games this fall. I know one player who goes there, Eric Butler from Moss Point. I know him well."
Who has made his early list of favorites?
"My favorites are (Mississippi) State, Ole Miss, Southern Miss, Vanderbilt, probably Rice because my brother goes there, and Louisiana-Lafayette," said Hopson, who has offers from all six. "I also like LSU and Tennessee."
With such heavy interest from so many schools, does he have an idea when he will make a commitment?
"I really haven't thought about it much," said Hopson. "I'm trying to see who all is interested in me."
Keep it right here to see which college is the lucky winner for the signature of this outstanding young talent.
