Bulldog golfers finish 7th in San Diego event

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Mississippi State men's golf team fired a final-round 314 Tuesday to finish in seventh place at the 15th Annual USD Invitational in San Diego, Calif. The Bulldogs fired scores of 303-304 in consecutive rounds Monday at the Del Mar Country Club (par 72; 6,950 yards).

San Diego State won the event, finishing 15 strokes ahead of second-place Denver. Yale finished third, 27 spots out of the lead.

Joe Deraney placed in a tie for tenth to lead MSU golfers. Deraney fired a four-over-par 76 on the final day to combine with his 74-76 performance from the first day of competition. Kellen Maurer had his best outing of the spring, finishing in a tie for 17th after shooting an 80 on Tuesday. Maurer shot a one-under 71 in his first round. Codie Mudd, who was the co-medalist of the LSU Spring Invitational, finished in a tie for 28th place after firing a 77. Tim Satow finished in a tie for 35th while Eoin Barton finished in 71st place for Mississippi State.

Individual medalist honors went to Denver's Tony Giarratano, who won by four shots after firing rounds of 75-70-70.

Mississippi State will return to action April 5-7 when the Bulldogs travel to the Plains to participate in the Billy Hitchcock Intercollegiate at Auburn, Ala.
