MSU wins series against Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Mississippi State pounded out a season-high 19 hits, including two home runs and a season-high eight doubles Sunday afternoon in registering a 13-3 series-clinching win over Kentucky at Cliff Hagan Stadium. The Bulldogs improved to 12-7-1 overall and 3-3 in the SEC while the Wildcats dropped to 11-12 and 2-4 in the SEC. The win was the 900th for coach Ron Polk in 23 seasons at Mississippi State.

State scored four times in the second, fourth and sixth innings to lead 13-0.

Casey Long went 4-for-4 and led a parade of Bulldog hitters with multiple-hit performances on a day when all nine Bulldog starters had hits. Chad Henry, Jon Mungle and Robby Goodson had three hits each while Matthew Maniscalco drove in three runs with his first home run of the season in the fourth inning. State got consecutive doubles by Mungle, Goodson and Long and a season-first two-run blast by Henry during a four-run burst in the second inning. Mungle and Goodson doubled twice for the Bulldogs.

Joey Collums (2-1) gave up a pair of singles and had runners at second and third to open the game. But the Germantown, Tenn., product worked through it and a bases-loaded jam in the fifth during a solid seven innings of shutout pitching. Brian Owens and Jacob Blakeney worked the final two innings.

UK starter Scott Wade (3-4) took the loss, giving up nine runs on 10 hits before leaving the game in the fifth inning.

Mississippi State returns to action at Dudy Noble Field Tuesday night, hosting the University of New Orleans Privateers at 6:30 p.m.
