BASKETBALL

Mississippi State basketball will have a congratulations party for the men's basketball team this week. I will post the complete details when I have them.

BASEBALL

The Diamond Dogs (12-7-1), after losing 2-of-3 to South Carolina last weekend, went on the road to Lexington, Kentucky and defeated the Wildcats 2-of-3 to move their SEC record to 3 and 3 on the season. The Dogs could have easily swept the Wildcats but blew a 5-0 lead in the second game of the series.

MSU sophomore lefthander Paul Maholm threw his second straight SEC complete-game victory during the Kentucky series. Paul continues to show the form that earned him the Baseball America pre-season SEC pitcher of the year selection.

After hitting just .269 last season, the current Diamond Dogs are hitting .321 as a group with 18 homers. Just for information purposes, last year's team hit its 18th homer on April 15th.

In case you are wondering, last year's team was 12-7, the same record as this year's team, after 19 games. The only difference is the 1 tie that this year's team has. Also, last year's team was 4-2 in the SEC after six games. This year's team, as stated above, is 3-3. And, like last year's team, this team is trying to find a relief pitcher who will emerge as the late-inning closer. Let's hope they wind up with the same results as last year's team did with the emergence of relief pitchers such as Wooten, Medders and Young.

FOOTBALL

Mississippi State continues spring practice this week with closed practices on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. I will have reports on all three practices.

As most of you know, former basketball player Michael Gholar is now practicing with the football team. The coaches had already noticed his athletic ability, and after this past Saturday's scrimmage they have noticed that he can make plays, as he recorded recorded 5 tackles (2 solo) during the scrimmage.

Michael, the best pure leaper on this past season's basketball team, will participate in the 14th annual Slam Dunk Championship as part of the Final Four weekend. You can see it on ESPN, March 28 at 6 p.m. (CT).

Mississippi State has had several Mississippi high school prospects attend practices this past week including Greenwood HS's Brandon Davis, a 6-6, 350+, junior offensive lineman; Oak Grove HS junior OL John Davis, 6-3, 295; Linzy Patterson, a 6-5, 215, junior tight end from Amory HS; Lance Fremin, a 6-2, 265, junior OL from Starkville HS; and Dezmond Sherrod, a 6-5, 216, junior tight end from Caledonia HS. Look for updates on all five of these players sometime this week.

FOOTBALL RECRUITING

I attended Mississippi State's high school football coaches' clinic this past Thursday and Friday. I made a lot of solid coaching contacts while attending the clinic. I also plan on attending at least one, and possibly two, Nike Camps (Student Sports, a member of TheInsiders network, organizes them) as well as at least one high school football combine and as many Mississippi high school spring football practices as possible in between MSU events and games. Beginning Tuesday, look for continuous recruiting updates on high school football players located in Mississippi, Memphis (a new MSU recruiting hotbed) and, to a lesser extent, Atlanta (MSU recruits a few players from there), during the spring, summer and fall.
