Class AAAAA - Region 7
Gwinnett schools that switched over from Region 8 dominated in their first year in Region 7, sweeping the top three spots in a region that also includes three North Fulton schools and South Forsyth.
Defending region champion Collins Hill appears ready to build on its 10-2 season. Expect running back Rock Robinson, who rushed for 985 yards and 13 TDs last season, to carry the load for the Eagles. The defense, which gave up only an average of 7.3 points per game until the seven-overtime, 70-68 win over South Cobb in the playoffs, should again be stout with defensive tackle Jamall Stewart (6-2, 256).
If Dacula, 8-3 in 2004, can fill holes at running back, it should be a contender with a handful of returning starters back from a year ago. Four-year starter Josh Warren (six TD catches, five interceptions) is an impact player on both sides of the ball.
North Gwinnett lost its coach - Dennis Roland took the head coaching job at Southeastern Louisiana University - but new coach Matt Moore will keep the Bulldogs' pass-every-down offense. That's a good idea with quarterback Bradd Schlosser (2,949 passing yards, 28 TDs) and 6-foot-5 wideout Crawford Kilpatrick (60 catches, 925 yards, nine TDs) coming back.
South Forsyth snuck into the playoffs as a four seed last year and hopes to duplicate that feat, but a talented Norcross team, on the brink of the playoffs for several years, is set for a breakthrough season. Highly recruited fullback Fred Munzenmaier (6-1, 230) hopes to lead the Blue Devils to the postseason.
Chattahoochee had a tough time in head coach Terry Crowder's first season, but with a year to learn his system, expect the perennial North Fulton power to be back in the playoff mix.
Centennial and Northview hope to crack the top tier of teams while Duluth is still looking for its first win under second-year coach Richard Gillespie.
Third-year school Peachtree Ridge is still a few years away from contending and second-year program Mill Creek is playing a non-region schedule.
