Running back Jerious Norwood (knee strain) was not at the start of morning work, staying in the training room to have his right knee worked on.
Safety Marcus Evans, who had been running co-first team, was in a yellow jersey will illness. Also in yellow was linebacker Gabe O'Neal.
With so many tackles out or limited, backups are getting lots of snaps with the first two units. The third line now has freshman Chris Spencer working at left tackle, after the rookie began camp at left guard.
Not only bodies were hurting Friday morning. Midway of the third period Coach Sylvester Croom called unit drills to a halt and essentially had everyone start practice over with a second round of warm-ups…after a stiff talking-to.
Also, just before media had to step out after the allowed one-hour of observation, a couple of second-teammers had to be carted to the training room. Offensive tackle Michael Gates went down in an individual contact drill and after a few minutes got up favoring his right leg. Cornerback Keith Fitzhugh also got a ride to the Shira Complex at the same time. Both players' status will be updated after practice ends.
The defense worked on a couple of ‘nickel' rotations. When starting cornerback Kevin Dockery moves in as a safety true freshman Derek Pegues takes his place at left corner. The second passing-down secondary has starting right corner David Heard as the extra safety, with Fitzhugh his replacement.
Practice was to end at 9:45. The afternoon session, in shells, will start at 3:45.
