"Going into the spring we had a few spots to fill such as the two DOG safety positions because of the graduation of Pig Prather and Shawn Byrdsong. I think that we are two-deep at those spots. There is a lot of competition at those spots."
Talk about the first four DOG safeties, Rico Bennett, Gabe Wallace, Milas Randle and Bryan Shumaker.
"Rico has made huge strides this spring. He was on the scout team last fall and started off slow because he had to learn everything. He really picked it up at the end. Gabe Wallace has been here a while and it is his time to really come on. Milas Randle is a great athlete and once he gets his mind set to do it, he will be good. Shumaker probably had his best spring."
Talk about your backup, Michael Gholar.
"The thing about Gholar is he came out here and acted like he had been on the team for three years. He feels very comfortable and everybody enjoys being around him because he is a good guy. It looks like he is going to help us on special teams. Coach Dunn will find some place for him to play."
Talk about Derrick Crockett, the redshirt freshman walk-on cornerback from Amite County HS and sophomore-to-be cornerback Slovakia Griffith.
"Derrick has come on. He is going to have to get ready to play because Demetric Wright just had knee surgery. Slovakia Griffith has had a good spring. I believe those two have made the biggest progress at corner."
Talk a little about how you did this spring.
"I didn't get a lot of reps during the spring because they try to give the younger guys more reps and keep everybody healthy. However, I think I made some improvements. I knew everything Coach Smith taught me and I learned some new things from Coach Hallman."
Talk a little about the adjustments you had to make with your new secondary coach, Curley Hallman.
"It has been a big adjustment because Coach Smith taught us to open our hips all the time while Coach Hallman wants us to back-pedal. It took some getting used to, but it is working. He definitely knows what he is doing."
With you being a senior next year, are you trying to be more of a leader?
"Yes, it is time for me, Mario, Donald Lee, Dontae and Justin Griffith to step it up."
