Georgia Salvages Series Finale Against MSU

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Junior right-hander Brandon Moorhead struck out a career-high 12 Sunday afternoon leading Georgia (17-10, 8-4 SEC) to a 9-2 win over Mississippi State (17-11-1, 6-5 SEC) in the weekend series finale. MSU won two of the three games in the Super Bulldog Weekend series, which attracted 22,269 fans at Dudy Noble Field.

Moorhead checked the Bulldogs on two hits and fanned 10 over the first four frames. In the fifth he gave up a bloop single to Casey Long and Matthew Brinson followed with a triple into the right-centerfield gap. He gave up four hits and walked three before giving way to Matt Woods in the sixth. Woods scattered three hits the remainder of the game, giving up an unearned run in the ninth and earning his first save of the year.

Georgia took the lead off MSU starter Joey Collums (2-2) with a pair of runs in the second inning. Adam Swann opened the frame with a single to left and scored on a double by Clint Sammons. Sammons plated the second run on the first of three singles on the day by left fielder Chaz Lytle.

Collums gave up three runs (two earned) on seven hits and struck out five, leaving the 3-1 game after giving up a leadoff double and striking out a batter in the sixth inning. But Georgia pulled away in the final two frames, scoring twice in the eighth and adding three more runs in the ninth on Marshall Szabo's third home run of the year.

Mississippi State continues its homestand with a pair of midweek games this week. MSU hosts Samford, coached by former MSU player and assistant coach Tim Parenton, Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. and Mississippi Valley State Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. MSU's homestand continues next weekend with a three-game series against SEC West rival Arkansas.
