Cross County Improves Finish at Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Mississippi State University men's cross country team had its best outing of the season on Friday afternoon. The Bulldogs finished 22nd at the Notre Dame Invitational. The meet was held at the Notre Dame Golf Course in South Bend, Ind.

"This was the best meet we've had at Notre Dame," said men's head coach Steve Dudley. "We didn't run John (Brigham) or Robert (Scribner). We're getting better, and I'm pleased the program is improving."

In his first race for the Maroon and White, junior transfer Wade Martin ran the 8K course in 25 minutes, 1 second to finish 59th overall. Junior Travis McKay ran 25:07 to finish in 69th. In addition to Martin and McKay, MSU had two other runners post marks below 26:00. Junior Brandon Smith ran 25:39, while sophomore Pad Judd's 25:47 put four Bulldogs among the top 125 competitors.

Last season, the Bulldogs have finished last among competitors at the Notre Dame meet.

On the women's side, the Lady Bulldogs finished 24th overall. Senior Zita Magloire was the team's top finisher, crossing the finish line of the 5K course in 17:54 to place 54th overall.

"We ran really badly," said women's head coach Al Schmidt. "We have to toughen up. We didn't do well. We will turn it around before the conference meet."

Both squads return to action on Saturday, Oct. 8 at the Auburn Invitational in Auburn, Ala.
