The last time I talked with Mark Jones, an offensive lineman from Spruce Creek HS in Port Orange, Florida, he was receiving recruiting calls from numerous schools. Not a lot has changed except that five schools are now calling him on a consistent weekly basis.
"Clemson, Mississippi State, Kansas, Kansas State and Florida State are calling me weekly," said the 6-4, 290-pound O-lineman, who has graded in the high 80's during his team's first five games.
And three of those colleges have taken it a step further by giving him written scholarship offers.
"My written offers are from Ole Miss, Kansas State, Kansas, Mississippi State and Indiana," said Mark.
Although he's received no offer from Florida State, he explained why he's interested in them.
"Florida State has told me that they are going to sign seven O-linemen," said Mark. "And they say they want me to be one of them."
And because of that interest, they have made his list of top 5 schools.
"Clemson, Kansas State, Kansas, Mississippi State and Florida State are the top 5 that I am considering right now," he said.
He explained what he likes about each program.
"I like Kansas and Kansas State because they were the first ones to come out and give me written offers. That shows that they have a lot of faith in me. I believe Kansas State has a program on the rise. They just need the players. They have the right coaches. Kansas is just a good program.
"I love (Clemson's) Coach Hobby. He's a real nice guy.
"Mississippi State makes you feel like you are more at home. You can trust them. You don't have to worry about anything.
"Florida State has always been a powerhouse. And it's a good place to go for recognition."
Now that he knows which schools are most interested in him, he's starting to set up his official visits.
"I'm going to visit Kansas State and Clemson for sure," he said. "I might go to Clemson next weekend, but I'm not really sure if my brother will be back from the Army. I have also set one up for Mississippi State, but I don't know exactly when it is going to be, yet. I'm also considering Florida State, and maybe Kansas and Georgia Tech."
Who will be the lucky schools that will receive his last two visits? We'll check back with Mark in about three weeks to find out if he's any closer to naming them.
