USM Defeats MSU 6-3

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Daniel Stewart registered his first complete-game pitching performance of the year Wednesday night as Southern Mississippi (25-14) bested Mississippi State (22-13) 6-3 to earn a split of a two-game series at Pete Taylor Park.

Stewart (3-2) allowed just four hits in the game, three of them coming during a two-run Mississippi State burst in the second inning. The USM right-hander gave up just one more hit and three baserunners the remainder of the game to pick up the win.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second when Brent Lewis opened the inning with a single, Steve Gendron followed with a double, and Michael Brown drove them home with a single to center field.

USM, blanked over the first four frames by MSU starter Ryan Carroll, scored its first run of the game on a fifth inning solo home run by Clint King. Carroll struck out three, walked two and gave up two hits in a career-longest 4.2 innings on the mound.

State used a pair of USM fielding miscues and a two-out single by Brent Lewis to take a 3-1 lead in the sixth. But USM answered quickly, scoring four times in the bottom of the sixth. Allen Winningham opened the inning with a double and both Jeff Cook and Griff Israel walked to load the bases. Clint Stoy singled in two runs, King followed with a run-scoring infield groundout, and a fourth run scored on a wild pitch. USM got a leadoff walk in the seventh, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI single by Cook to plate its final run in the seventh.

Young absorbed his first loss of the year for MSU. He was charged with four runs on two hits with a pair of walks.

The Bulldogs continue their five-game road run and open a three-game SEC Western Division weekend series Friday (6:30 p.m.) at Auburn (25-14, 7-8 SEC).
