"West Virginia offered and State just offered me today," said the 6-4, 295-pound offensive lineman.
The offer from State came as somewhat of a surprise to J.D., because they literally had only started showing serious interest in him a few days ago.
"They had sent a few letters, but they first called me last week," he said. "The first time they called me was this past Sunday. (MSU offensive line coach J.B. Grimes) said they have a young offensive line and they said they are recruiting me because they feel they need some older guys to come in. One of their tackles is really a guard. And the other tackle is very young. And they are trying to get some maturity on the line."
State and West Virginia, along with a third school, are calling him on a consistent basis.
"Right now, West Virginia, Ole Miss and Mississippi State are calling me," said J.D.
When asked to name his favorites, J.D. said, "my favorites are West Virginia, Mississippi State and Ole Miss. They are pretty much even right now."
Considering he played high school ball at Natchez High School in Natchez, Mississippi, I asked him if playing in Mississippi would be a priority for him.
"No, not really," he said. "Distance won't be a factor."
J.D., who will graduate in May, 2006, talked about what he likes about each of those three schools.
"The West Virginia coaches seem pretty nice. And they tell me that they will make sure I graduate. Even if you use all of your eligibility, they will make sure you graduate by keeping you there another year."
"Academically, Mississippi State's football GPA last spring was the highest they've had. That's a good point right there. Their coaches are pretty nice. Their offensive line coach is recruiting me. And I know a lot of the players up there, too."
"I like the same thing about Ole Miss that I like about West Virginia; they will make sure that you graduate."
All three of his favorites have either set up or will set up official visits.
"Ole Miss has set up a visit for the first weekend of December," said J.D. "State is going to set up one. And West Virginia said they want to set up one after my season is over."
What will be the determining factors when it comes time to select a college?
"I want to go there and play when I get there," said J.D. "Then academics. That's pretty much it."
