Seven schools are calling weekly and four of those have offered a scholarship.
"On a consistent basis, I talk to the University of Alabama, Clemson, UConn, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, Purdue and Ole Miss," said Akeem. "Right now, I have offers from Ole Miss, UConn, Vanderbilt and Mississippi State. I talked to (Mississippi State assistant) Coach (Guy) Holliday and he said they should get the (offer) letter out sometime this week." (This interview was done late last week.-Gene)
Five of the seven who are calling him currently stand atop his list.
"I would say my top five are Alabama, Ole Miss, Clemson, Mississippi State and I would say UConn," said Akeem, who has recorded between 75 and 85 tackles so far this season, including close to 20 for losses.
He gave the reasons why those five stand out.
"Alabama is playing really good right now," he said. "They are doing real good things in the SEC. I like their style of defense. They have a good defense and offense. It seems like their entire team is clicking.
"I had a chance to watch two of Ole Miss' recent games and I liked their style of defense. I would have a chance to go play for a big school.
"I went to Clemson for their first game against Texas A&M. And I liked the atmosphere up there and it's not too far from home. They are playing real good right now, even though their record doesn't indicate it. Everybody gets a chance to show what they can do.
"Right now, I have caught a couple of (Mississippi State's) games. Their team is starting to come together. They have a pretty nice defense. I like their style of defense. (Their coach) said that I might have a chance to come in and play as a freshman.
"(UConn) has have a pretty nice team. I talked to their head coach (recently). They are a really aggressive team."
As for official visits, while none have been finalized, he has an idea who he will visit.
"I haven't set up any, yet, but I'm talking about setting them up," said the 6-2, 208 pounder. "I'm thinking about visiting Alabama, Mississippi State, UConn, Clemson and Ole Miss."
Akeem mentioned that one team, Mississippi State, has talked to him about the possibility of playing as a freshman. What are his thoughts about that?
"To come in and play as a freshman would be a great opportunity," said Akeem. "All it would take is hard work and practice hard. But it's really not that big of a deal to me. I wouldn't mind redshirting my freshman year. I could get bigger, stronger and faster and learn everything."
What is his criteria for choosing a college?
"I would like to see how the coaches interact with the players; not being too hard, but teaching the players the game itself," he said. "Academically, I would like to major in something that I would be successful in. The size of the school and city won't matter. Wherever I go, I'm just trying to find the perfect college for me; the best fit for me."
We'll have another recruiting update on Akeem Dent in 3 to 4 weeks.
