Brent Lewis leads Bulldogs to 17-5 win

STARKVILLE, Miss. - All nine Mississippi State starters hit safely Wednesday night as the Bulldogs (25-15-1) belted West Alabama (18-32) 17-5 at Dudy Noble Field. It was the first meeting between the two schools since 1994.

"Thankfully, we don't play tomorrow (Thursday) because everytime we score that many runs we don't score the next day," said MSU coach Ron Polk. "I think this is the 11th or 12th double-digit win that we have. We have only given up one, that was Sunday at Auburn."

MSU matched a season-high with 19 hits and Brent Lewis went 3-for-4 to pace the Bulldogs. "I feel better at the plate now," said Lewis. "I feel like I am more consistent this year."

State scored four unearned runs in the first inning off UWA starter Bo Edmiston (2-5). "The four-spot in the first was a gift," said Polk.

Edmiston, the first of seven Tiger pitchers in the game, gave up five hits and five unearned runs in three innings of pitching.

"They didn't walk many," said Lewis. "They had strike-throwers. We just swung the bats real well tonight."

State erupted for five runs in the fourth, scoring twice on a Matthew Brinson double. J.B. Tucker, making his second career start as a catcher, belted a three-run home run, his third of the season, during a four-run MSU uprising in the sixth. Tucker and outfielder Winston Pearson set career-highs with three-RBI nights.

"We got a bunch of two-out hits tonight," said Brinson. "Coach McNickle said that is how you win games."

MSU starter Ryan Carroll (2-0) worked five innings and picked up the win, allowing four runs on six hits. "Ryan is a senior and we wanted him to get the win," said Polk. "It was a good win for him."

Mississippi State used four other pitchers during the game, Saunders Ramsey (no runs in 1 inning), Brian Owens (no runs in 1 inning), Jonathan Papelbon (1 run in 1 inning), and Robby Goodson (no runs in 1 inning).

The Bulldogs matched a season-high with three double plays and played their 11th error-free game of the year.

Martin Jackson and Walt Simmons had two hits and one RBI each to lead UWA.

The Bulldogs travel to Nashville, Tenn., Thursday and open a three-game SEC weekend series at Vanderbilt Friday at 7 p.m.

"Going into Vanderbilt, we have got to have three," said Brinson. "We don't want two, we want three. I say that every weekend but there is a sense of urgency this weekend. Like Coach Polk said, we have to play every game like it is the last game of the year."
