One of the top linebackers in the state of Mississippi, Meridian High School's Roshaad Byrd has four schools calling him on a consistent basis and another school that called him just a week ago.

"Texas A&M, Alabama, Southern Miss, Iowa State call me consistently," said the 6-3, 215-pounder who has offers from Southern Miss, Texas A&M, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Alabama and Iowa State. "I talked to (Mississippi State defensive coordinator and assistant) Coach (Ellis) Johnson last week on Thursday. He said that he couldn't get my number and just got it. I hadn't heard from them in awhile."

As for a top five, Roshaad's not ready to name a top five.

"I don't have a top five," he said. "They are all pretty much the same."

Any official visits scheduled?

"Texas A&M, Alabama, Southern Miss...all of the ones that have offered (have talked about official visits)," said Roshaad. "I'm not quite sure on the five schools, but I'm trying to wind them down."

Roshaad talked about what he likes about each of the schools that is calling him.

"I like (Texas A&M assistant) Coach (Melvin) Smith, the coach recruiting me. He won't quit coming after you. He tells me that they need linebackers because the ones that they have are seniors. And I've been watching some of their games.

"Alabama always keeps a good defense, year in, year out. And that's something that I love. That let's me know that they know how to coach defensive players.

"Southern Miss is the same as Alabama.

"I've just started checking (Iowa State) out. And it's the same as with Texas A&M.

"(Mississippi State) is in a rebulding mold. And (MSU head) Coach (Sylvester) Croom has told me that he doesn't believe in redshirting players unless they aren't ready to play. He said I could come in and get some playing time early and help them out."

As Roshaad sets up his official visits, we'll be there to report the latest.
