Women's Hoops Host Athletes in Action Friday

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- The Mississippi State Lady Bulldogs will host the Athletes in Action in the final exhibition game this Friday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. before the 2005-06 season tips off. This will be the first time these two teams have met since the 2000-01 season.

State comes into the contest after losing its first exhibition game to the Houston Jaguars last week, 92-79. Despite the loss head coach Sharon Fanning was pleased with leadership from her seniors and the play from several key newcomers. Senior guard/forward Blessing Chekwa tallied 13 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Robin Porter tallied her first collegiate double-double in an exhibition game with 17 points and 14 rebounds while fellow freshman Heather Hollis scored 12.

The Lady Bulldogs have already been plagued with several preseason injuries. Among those injured is senior guard Doceide Warren who didn't play last week due to tightness in her right hip and hamstring and is questionable for this week as well. With the absence of Warren vs. the Jaguars, junior transfer Sarah Johnson received the starting nod at point guard seeing 31 minutes of action and tallied nine points in her first game for the Lady Bulldogs.

Athletes in Action is searching for its first win of the season after losing its eighth straight to North Carolina, 80-57. Guard Kristi Channing was the leading scorer with 13 points and guard Molly McDowell tallied nine. AIA will face Ole Miss Rebels on Thursday night. The last time these two teams met was in the 2000-01 season on Nov. 13, 2000 when the Lady Bulldogs defeated AIA, 72-65.

The 2005-06 regular season will tip-off on Friday, Nov. 18 vs. Southeastern Louisiana at 7 p.m.
