Provine HS (Jackson, MS) QB Jeremy Young

[Premium article] Gene's Page interviewed Provine HS quarterback Jeremy Young on May 1st. Jeremy was selected by The Clarion-Ledger as one of the top 50 juniors in the state of Mississippi. He, along with his teammates Quinton Culberson, Greg Clark and Robert Hough, were visited by nationally known recruiting analyst Tom Lemming on Lemming's spring tour of the top players in the nation.

What does Jeremy's coach say about him? "Jeremy will probably be one of the premiere quarterbacks coming out next season," said Coach Willie Collins. "He has been starting for us since the 10th grade."


I've talked to your coach and he gave me your height, weight and forty speed. I have you listed as 6-4, 180 with a 4.6 forty?
"Yes sir, that is correct except I'm now 190."

I know you play quarterback. Do you play any positions other than quarterback?
"Sometimes I play a little free safety."

I know your primary position is quarterback. How long have you been playing quarterback?
"I have been playing quarterback since the seventh grade."

What do you feel are your strengths on the football field?
"I am pretty accurate and can get my passes to the players that are open. I am pretty tall, so I can see through the lane."

What are some things you feel you need to improve on as a quarterback?
"I think I need to learn to read defenses better. I also feel like I need to get faster."

What are your personal goals for next season? I'm going to ask you your team goals next.
"My personal goals are to get faster and stronger during the summer. During the season, I want to make All-Metro again. I also want to try and make All-State. And I want to play in one of the all-star games, either the Bernard Blackwell or Mississippi-Alabama all-star game."

What are you team goals for next season?
"I want us to get better as a team and go undefeated during the regular season and win our division. Hopefully, we can make it to the state championship game and get us a championship."

What honors did you earn other than The Clarion-Ledger second-team All-Metro?
"I got first-team All-District in our division."

Didn't nationally known recruiting analyst Tom Lemming come to Jackson to interview you and a couple of your teammates?
"Yes sir. He talked with our coaches and parents. We went outside and he took individual pictures and group pictures."

Other than you, what other players were at the meeting with Tom Lemming?
"From Provine, it was me, our tight end Robert Hough, running back Greg Clark and Quinton Culberson. From Jim Hill, it was the receiver Jason Husband and from Callaway, it was Donovan Davis."

Did you attend any camps last summer?
"I attended the Ole Miss camp and the Mississippi State camp."

Do you plan on attending any camps this summer?
"I plan on going back to the Ole Miss and Mississippi State camps. I also want to try and make it to the Auburn camp. I also play basketball and will be attending the Bob Gibbons camp in North Carolina (May 25-28)."

I didn't know you played basketball. How good are you in basketball?
"I'm pretty good. I made All-Metro in basketball also."

Are you a guard or forward?
"Guard."

What are you the best at in basketball?
"I can shoot the deep ball."

Have you attended any basketball camps before?
"Last year, I went to the Bob Gibbons camp and the Erick Dampier Camp (in Jackson)."

Did you attend any college football camps last fall?
"No sir."

Did you attend any college Junior Days this spring?
"I attended the Mississippi State and Ole Miss Junior Days."

Talk about both of them, your impressions of each. Basically, I'm asking you what your impressions of the campuses and coaching staffs were?
"Both campuses have good environments. I loved the coaching staffs. I liked Ole Miss' quarterback Coach Roper and I liked Mississippi State's Coach Davis."

Are those the two coaches that will be recruiting you?
"Yes sir."

Did you attend any college spring football games?
"No sir."

Did you parents attend a college?
"Yes sir, both of my parents attended Jackson State."

Do you have any brothers or sisters who have attended or are attending college?
"My brother is attending the University of Wyoming on a football scholarship. He transferred from Hinds Community College in January."

Have you grown up a fan of any particular college?
"I grew up as a Jackson State and Florida fan."

What schools are sending you letters?
"Auburn, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Florida, Arkansas, Memphis, Stanford, LSU, Alabama, Duke, Florida State, Southern Miss, Jackson State and quite a few others."

What schools are you most interested in at this time?
"The ones that I'm interested in are Mississippi State and Auburn because those are the only two who have offered me a scholarship, so far."

Oh, you have scholarship offers already? I bet that was a thrill?
"Yes sir."

When did you receive your offers?
"Auburn was in February and Mississippi State in March."
